WHAT IS INK TARSIA?

Intarsia landscape - Stoneground Studios

INTARSIA is a type of mosaic work, pieced with inlay of stone or wood.

Tarsia work in stone inspired floor inlay and designs with semi-precious stone. Tarsia work in wood inspired marquetry and intricate inlaid designs in furniture.  Knitters use intarsia techniques to create multi-colored pattern, like argyll.

A few years ago, I was intrigued with intarsia jewelry, pendants and bracelets crafted with small pieces of semi-precious stone that were set into an detailed pattern like a quilt. The tiny pieces of turquoise, coral, purple sugelite, milky quartz, malachite, or onyx were cut and polished with precision, and then fitted together like a jigsaw puzzle.

The word “intarsia” may derive from the Latin interserere,’or “to insert.” In this new blog I insert shiny bits of found color and grit from the journey.  I sketch with words, rather than stone, to draft a mosaic in text.

Tarsia work with ink.   Ink tarsia.

What a wonderful undertaking - especially on top of everything else you do! I understand the drive to write - but am personally in a perpetual stage of procrastination - various notebooks, logs and journals scattered about the house. There are even 150 pages of single-spaced type hidden away somewhere, a “novel,” of sorts. I’ve been unable to decide exactly what the story is - there are so many little stories on these pages. And, I’m still struggling with the tense I wish to use. So there it sits - as all my other words do. I envy you the energy and discipline it takes to sit down and stick with it - to write. My blessings to you, Sherry as you undertake this blog. Maybe some day I’ll come unstuck and be able to let the words flow.

Hi, Sherry! The site is very pretty and the pictures are great. It’s nice to hear from you and I feel so “bloggy” writing to you, since I don’t blog or read blogs otherwise.

Oh, Sherry, I’m so proud of you. I feel like a Mama bird watching one of her fledglings take flight. What a wonderful, creative way to share this precious gift you’ve been experimenting with, studying about, and practicing on for so long. What a beautiful first soaring flight! I know Bob and I will enjoy every future Ink Tarsia installment. Congratulations! We love you.

Sherry, I am so happy to be able to read of your and the family’s life when i can’t talk with you or haven’t in awhile. I can quickly see if you have added anything. Inktarsia is such a beautiful art form and so is your writing. I adore the Bird of Happiness piece, your take on Dr.Brueggemann and the solar conference, and of course anything you write when you include my three favorite “boys.” You’re an inspiration to me. Love ya! Ann
