Shook foil

The Writer’s Almanac reminds me that today is the birthday of Gerard Manley Hopkins, the poet of sprung rhythm, born in 1844.

This poem has never left me:

God’s Grandeur

The world is charged with the grandeur of God.
It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil
Crushed.
